On March 1st, the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Mall joined with the Metro Business Solution Center to present the workshop entitled “Generating & Retaining Customers through Social Media.”
Guests received specific details on marketing via Facebook, Instagram, and Yelp including information on each platform’s merits. Understanding profile pages, active users, demographics, advertising, analytics, reviews, and when to post were topics covered by Metro BSC web developers Dakar Lee and Jasmin Harvey along with Yelp representative Katie Burbank.
It is anticipated that this will be the first in a quarterly workshop series held in partnership with the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Mall.
Credit & Money
On August 8th, the Metro Business Solution Center in conjunction with the Los Angeles SBA hosted the workshop ‘An Entrepreneur’s Guide to Credit & Money.' It was presented by Harry Williams, Executive Vice President of the Los Angeles Chapter of SCORE and developed jointly by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Those present received a comprehensive primer on how individuals can rapidly improve their personal credit without the use of credit repair and understand how business credit is built. Included in the presentation was an introduction to the Business Credit Literacy Initiative which provides start-ups and existing small businesses with a turn-key approach toward accessing a minimum of $100,000 in funding. Attendees were able to receive the presentation along with a link to access details of the program. All in attendance were appreciative and commented how enthusiastic they are to participate in the program. On Thursday March 9th, Crenshaw area merchants and businesses received an introductory primer to Yelp, the online reputation management platform. Attendees received guidance on how to claim their business listing and how to use Yelp’s free tools.Community Manager, Katie Burbank provided instruction on creating a dynamic profile including adding keywords along with photos & videos. Analytics, promotions, lead tracking, and how to respond to reviews and rankings were covered thoroughly. Business owners also received personal suggestions on enhancing their existing listings.

BUILD YOUR BUSINESS PLAN IN A DAY
On February 27th the Metro Business Solution Center hosted a day-long training workshop entitled "Build Your Business Plan in a Day" where attendees were provided with a free app to download to their smart phones and tablets. Course instructor Frank Stokes, a long time business consultant and executive training coach, provided the class with comprehensive guidance on utilizing the various app components which included sections on Vision, Mission, & Values; Personal Finance Market Analysis; Products & services; Operations; and Business Finance. Thee free course along with intuitive app was free to Crenshaw area businesses and Urban League clients courtesy of Metro's Business Solution Center and Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation. Following the completion of the workshop, each participant saved and printed their business plans leading all to comment on the overall value they received.
"I always loved business principles but never had the finances. I appreciate the programs," Barber Shahid Ali stated. "After 11 years, I finally have a business plan."

Workshop Recap: METRO BSC SALON MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP
The Metro Business Solution Center recently held an educational series for Crenshaw & Inglewood stylists and barbers over the course of 3 days beginning August 15th. The Salon Management Course was developed as a follow-up to the December 2015 workshop to assist the contingent of haircare providers that exist along the Metro Crenshaw/LAX rail alignment.
Ken Williams, owner of Universal College of Beauty and former member of the California Board of Barbering & Cosmetology taught the classes. Some of the discussion topics included start-up advice, niche marketing & social media, local & state licensing and compliance, operations & contractor agreements, common problems experienced, and selling retail.
In addition to receiving valuable instruction on barber & beauty best practices, attendees were able to network with each other and exchange ideas and contact information. Both Ken Williams and the BSC received several positive comments regarding this informative workshop. The BSC has identified over 25 individual barber shops and beauty salons along the corridor and within Downtown Inglewood.
Get Your Business Online: June Series

From Tuesday, June 14th- Thursday, June 16, the Metro Business Solutions and the Los Angeles Urban League partnered with Google and held a morning workshop entitled “Get Your Business Online.” Individuals attending included several owners of businesses along the alignment. Jasmin Harvey of the BSC led the group through the step by step process of getting your business on Google Maps and Search for free, building a free website, and using Google AdWords Express to budget online advertising for businesses. This workshop will be repeated every other month to accommodate the business owners that were not able to attend, but are interested in learning tools to increase their business' web presence.

On April 27, 2016, the Metro Business Solutions Center partnered with Yelp and held an afternoon workshop entitled “Yelp 101”. Individuals attending included several owners of businesses along the alignment. Yelp representative, Katie Burbank, led the group through the step by step process of taking control of their online reputation and using Yelp as a tool to improve their marketing and customer relations; all are free tools. After visiting their current Yelp profile, business owners learned: ways to improve their profile and interact with customers, analyze and utilize data from their Yelp page, and consistently manage their online reputation to become a five-star business.

Building Your Brand
March 30, 2016
On Wednesday, March 30th the Metro BSC held a lunch workshop entitled “Building Your Brand.” Twenty-five individuals attended including several owners of businesses along the alignment. Vincent Scatliffe of CL Design Group led the group through a highly interactive assignment where they broke up into groups and were tasked with developing a brand statement, digital profile and website elements based on their group discussions. All attendees rated the workshop excellent on their workshop evaluations and ten have been chosen to receive one-on-one consultations as part of their BSC assistance.
